What Is Vibe Editing? How to Make UGC Ads by Describing Them

You don’t need to know how to edit to make a good UGC ad anymore. You need to know what you want it to feel like.

Vibe editing is editing a video by describing what you want. You tell an AI video editor the feeling, the key moments and the length, then react to the cut until it feels right. That’s what we built Ponder for.

You describe the video the way you’d describe it to a friend who edits: “Make it fast and funny.” “Start with the part where she gasps.” “This feels too salesy, make it more casual.” Ponder builds the cut, and you keep watching and asking for changes until it’s right. You never touch a keyframe or sit through an hour-long tutorial on J-cuts.

Why does vibe editing work so well for UGC ads?

UGC comes with a lot of loose footage, it’s often made by people who aren’t editors, and it needs many versions fast. Describing a change is much quicker than making it by hand.

Creators film long and loose, and someone has to find the 20 good seconds. Ponder looks through all of it so you don’t have to scrub. The people making the ads are often founders, marketers, social managers or the creators themselves, and they know what a good ad feels like without wanting to learn editing software.

You also need volume, since one ad is a guess and ten variants are a test. And UGC wins on timing, honesty and a good hook, which are easy to say out loud and slow to do by hand.

Because you’re editing real footage, the result still looks like a real person made it.

How do I vibe edit a UGC ad?

Put in all your footage, say what the video is for, watch the first cut, react to it in plain words, then ask for versions.

Step 1: Put all the footage in

Add every take and clip, including the ones you think are useless, without sorting them first. Ponder watches and listens to everything, organizes it and finds the usable moments. The clip you almost deleted sometimes has the best reaction.

Step 2: Say what the video is for

Before you ask for a cut, give Ponder the basics:

  • Who it’s for (“busy moms”, “people who hate meal prep”)
  • Where it runs (Reels, TikTok, YouTube pre-roll)
  • How long
  • How it should feel (“funny and fast”, “calm and honest”)

People skip this part, and the first cut is usually worse for it.

Step 3: Watch the first cut

Treat it like a first draft from an editor who’s fast but just met you. Some choices will be right and some won’t.

Step 4: React like you would to a person

You don’t need editing words or even typing, because in review mode you can talk through your notes and scribble on the frame. Say what you’d say to a friend:

  • “It takes too long to get to the product.”
  • “I love the part where he laughs, open with that.”
  • “The ending feels flat.”

Ponder changes what you asked about and leaves the rest alone.

Tip: Talking is often faster than typing. Hold fn and just say it.

Step 5: Ask for versions

Once one cut feels right, branch it into a shorter version, a different hook or a version for another audience, all from the same footage. If you’re testing openers, here’s how to test hooks and read the results.

Step 6: Post it, or finish it somewhere else

If it’s done, post it. If you or an editor want to polish it, send it to Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve, Final Cut Pro or CapCut. See what carries over to your editing app.

What should I say to get a good edit?

Vibe editing still needs specifics. The prompts that work best name a feeling and a moment.

Instead of thisTry this
“Make it better”“Make the first 3 seconds hit harder. Open on her reaction, not the intro.”
“Make it viral”“Make it fast and funny, like a friend showing off something they just bought.”
“Shorter”“Get it to 15 seconds. Keep the hook and the before-and-after. Cut the rest.”
“Add some energy”“Punch in on the reactions and cut on the beat.”
“Fix the ending”“End on the line where he says he’d buy it again.”

If you like how a cut turned out, ask Ponder to save it as a style so your next video starts there.

Does vibe editing mean the AI does everything?

No. Ponder can find the moments, but you decide which one the ad is about, and you’re the one who knows which line is funny and which reaction feels true. Watch every ad before it goes live.

The footage still matters too, since no edit can create a reaction that never happened. When you brief creators, ask for:

  • The product in hand, clearly visible, early
  • The key line said three different ways
  • A few extra seconds before and after every reaction
  • Some quiet close-ups of the product being used

Is vibe editing the same as AI video generation?

No, vibe editing works with footage you or your creators actually shot, while AI video generation makes new footage from scratch.

What else should I know?

  • Do I need editing experience? No, if you can describe what a good video feels like, you can vibe edit.
  • Can I talk instead of typing? Yes, just hold fn and say what you want.
  • Can I still fine-tune the edit by hand? Yes, you can send the cut to Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve, Final Cut Pro or CapCut.
  • Can I edit a video with a prompt? Yes, in Ponder you type or say what you want, like “cut it to 30 seconds and open on the reaction,” and Ponder edits your footage to match.

Is it free to try?

Yes, there’s a Ponder free trial, so you can drop in your raw creator footage, tell Ponder what you want it to feel like and watch the first cut come together.

If you love it, you can keep going for free by inviting a friend. Click the invite button in Ponder, and your friend gets a free month of Starter, then you get one too once they make and export their first cut.
